I felt they really conveyed that uniquely Norse tendency toward heroic sacrifice well, too - the game is about a shieldmaiden who unfortunately drowned at sea, which was considered an unworthy death. But it added so much to the feel of the game, and really made you appreciate the culture and mythos that informed the game. It had nothing to do with the game proper. There's a lot of beautiful little details that didn't even need to be there - like at one point you're running around the branches of Yggdrasil and you get all these little cameos from various entities out of myth.
